The Conca del Salto is a waterfall about 5km from Modica, which used to have a number of watermills providing flour for the Contea. It also has a grotta behind the waterfall which can be visited with speleologists and which requires abseiling down the gorge.
It is believed that in ancient times the Fiumara was navigable from Donnalucata up to this point, which may or may not decide whether Modica has a Phoenician history.
The presepe show the valley of the Salto with the holy family sheltering in the grotta behind the waterfall while the Magi approach on foot through the valley.
